Why I’m Proud We Didn’t Win the Guildmaster Award in 2025 | Prima Construction

If you look at our website footer, you’ll see a badge we are incredibly proud of: Guildmaster Award with Highest Distinction. We won it in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Then comes 2025. The badge isn’t there.

Did our quality drop? Did we stop caring? No.
We stopped working. And honestly? I have never been prouder of a decision.

The Truth About Burnout

The last few years have been a blur. During the COVID era, everyone looked at their four walls and decided it was time to remodel. We were grateful for the work, but the pace was relentless.

On top of the professional pressure, I was dealing with the personal reality of perimenopause. The sleepless nights, the brain fog, the physical toll—it was a perfect storm. I realized I was running on fumes. You cannot build other people’s dream homes when you are struggling to find peace in your own life.

Scott and I looked at each other and made a terrifying decision: We are taking a year off.

A Year of Adventure (and Wine)

We shut down the job sites, turned off the email notifications, and packed our bags. We needed to remember who we were outside of “General Contractors.”

2025 wasn’t about rest; it was about living.

We hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc, pushing our physical limits around one of the most beautiful peaks in Europe.
We went on Safari, watching elephants and lions do their thing, reminding us that there is a big world outside of construction schedules.
We drank wine in Tuscany (because, obviously).
We learned to Kite Surf, crashing into the water and getting back up again.
We spent uninterrupted time with family.

Stronger Than Ever

There is a risk in working with your spouse. The stress of construction can bleed into your marriage. But stepping away reminded us why we make such a good team.

After a year of traveling, problem-solving in foreign languages, and navigating trails together, I can honestly say our relationship has never been stronger. We are coming back not just as business partners, but as a refreshed, united front.

The New Prima Construction

We are back for the 2026 season, but we aren’t going back to “business as usual.”

The sabbatical taught us that we do our best work when we aren’t spread thin. We refuse to go back to the burnout pace.
Going forward, we are committing to running only 2-3 projects at a time.

This allows us to maintain the work-life balance we fought so hard to regain. It also means that if you are one of our clients, you get all of us. You get a rested Kim. You get a focused Scott. You get a team that is excited to be there, not just getting through the day.
