Twin Cities Kitchen Remodeling: Modern Living for Historic Homes
The kitchen is the heart of the home, but in many of the Twin Cities’ most charming older houses, it is often the most cramped and outdated room. Whether you own a 1920s bungalow in Minneapolis or a Victorian in St. Paul, your home was likely built for a different era of cooking and gathering.
At Prima Construction, we don’t just “do kitchens.” We specialize in the complex, delicate art of remodeling kitchens in older homes. We believe your kitchen should be tailored to your modern lifestyle without erasing the character that makes your home unique.
The Challenges of Remodeling Older Twin Cities Homes
Many contractors treat a 1920s remodel like a 2020s new build. That is a recipe for disaster. We understand the “guts” of your vintage home.
Structural Integrity
You cannot simply demo a wall in a historic home. We are experts at working with complicated engineering tasks like removing a load-bearing wall and replacing it with LVL to delicate plaster and lath, ensuring that vibrations from demolition don’t crack the walls in your dining room or upstairs. We also plan for the reality that “nothing is square.” We use specialized framing techniques to ensure your new cabinets install perfectly level, even if your original floors have settled over the last century.

The “Mechanical” Maze
A common roadblock in Twin Cities kitchen remodels is the heating system.
- Radiators: Want to remove a wall to open up your kitchen? There is often a radiator in the way. We have extensive experience moving, refinishing, or replacing cast-iron radiators with modern, efficient alternatives.
- Plumbing: If your home was built before 1960, you likely have galvanized steel pipes that are corroding from the inside out. We don’t cover them up; we replace them to ensure your new kitchen has clean water and pressure.
Smart Space Planning for Smaller Footprints
Older homes often have “galley” kitchens isolated from the rest of the house. We excel at structural changes—removing load-bearing walls and installing structural headers—to create the open-concept “eat-in” kitchens that modern families need, without expanding the home’s footprint.

The Prima Difference
Woman-Owned & Hands-On Leadership
Prima Construction is rare in the remodeling industry. We are a woman-owned and operated business where the owner, Kim Studham, is often on-site doing the work herself. Kim brings architectural training and decades of hands-on building experience to your project. This means the person designing your solution understands exactly how to build it.
Fixed-Price Contracts & Transparent Pricing
Surprises belong at birthday parties, not in renovation invoices. Because we specialize in older homes, we know what to look for during our site visits. This allows us to offer a fixed-price contract before construction begins. You will know exactly what your investment is.
4-Year Guildmaster Award Winner (2021-2024)
Client satisfaction is our only metric. We are proud to be the only kitchen and bath remodeler in the Twin Cities to win the Guildmaster with Highest Distinction Award for four consecutive years.
(Note: In 2025, we took a scheduled sabbatical to travel and recharge our creative batteries. We are now back, refreshed, and our design queue is open!)
Serving the Entire Twin Cities Metro
While our headquarters is in Columbia Heights, we work extensively across the metro area.
- Minneapolis Remodeling: Expert renovations for South Minneapolis, Northeast, and the Lakes.
- St. Paul Remodeling: Navigating the strict codes of Summit Hill, Highland Park, and Mac-Groveland.
- Suburban Homes: We also bring character to newer homes in Edina, Minnetonka, St. Louis Park, and Roseville.
