Cost is the main hesitation most people have when envisioning their new home. We’ll walk you through a project we worked on recently in early spring 2020 to help clear up that hesitation.
Most of their home had already been remodeled, and her kitchen’s new wood beam and open concept reminded us of one of our other projects. She brought an incredible energy to the project and knew exactly what aesthetic she liked. The homeowner brought us in to remodel her bathroom, which seemed to be the last room of the house left untouched. When we arrived, there was a built-in on the opposite side of the wall behind the toilet causing it to protrude out into the room, and the shower was originally a closet. The whole room was dark and segmented, especially considering the number of windows trying to fill the space with natural light. She contacted us to open and brighten up the room and to bring our design expertise to the table.
Adding a shower and a brand-new vanity from Restoration Hardware took some work but was nothing we couldn’t handle. The toilet, however, turned out to be the greatest obstacle. As home was built in 1936, we eventually butted heads with a symptom of its age: the bathroom’s floor was slanted, and so was the drainpipe from the toilet. The drainpipe had leveled off relative to the water main, which had caused the toilet to intermittently fail. Ultimately, we were able to recede the toilet by removing the built-in, run the toilet drainpipe parallel to the floor joists then through a soffit we had built in their foyer, and conceal the soffit with some detailing. The homeowner was more than happy to help and add her own style to the space. Her vision, enthusiasm, and solid choice of aesthetics were really the luckiest finds at the job site.
